June is graduation season here in the Triangle area of North Carolina. In between trying to secure enough tickets to the ceremony for all of the extended family and asking yourself how your child could possibly be graduating high school or college (weren’t they tottering off to kindergarten just yesterday??), there’s also a truly memorable graduation party to plan.
Fortunately, we have you covered. An old-style backyard party, complete with games, food, and fun is a great way to celebrate your senior in style without breaking the bank. Check out these essentials to make the day one to remember.
Food
If there’s anything we Raleigh, NC natives know about, it’s tailgating, so why not consider tailgate goodies for the main food items? Grilled burgers, dogs, and brats are a great staple. And of course, there’s barbecue (vinegar or tomato base? – the debate rages on!).
And don’t forget the dessert. There’s nothing like a good sheet cake with rich buttercream icing. A half sheet cake feeds about 50 people, while a full cake can serve up to 117 so plan accordingly. Orderting a week or more in advance will ensure it can be done in time, especially during the extremely busy graduation season. Want some other ideas? Try a cake pop or cupcake with mini, edible diploas.
Outdoor Games
This fun, easy game has grown into a nationwide trend. Two plywood boards, eight bean bags, and a good throwing arm are all that’s required. Measure off 24 feet of space between the fronts of each board, (27 feet for official tournaments). Be precise – people get serious about their cornhole – they’ll know if it’s not right!
Order a custom wrap or decal online to create a one-of-a-kind board representing your graduate’s future school, their alma mater, or even the new company they’ll soon be working for.
Specialty T-shirts
A themed t-shirt is a fun idea. Give yourself time in advance of the party to work with a local screenprinter – they can usually be turned around quickly but you do want to make sure they’re ready in time. Order shirts in the graduate’s school colors, include their accomplishments, or add a picture of the grad in their cap and gown.
Tables, Chairs, and Tents – Oh My!
Ensure you have plenty of seating for your guests. Table and chair rentals that can be easily delivered and removed later is the perfect option. Choose rectangular tables for food and gifts, and round tables for easy conversation as your guests sit, eat, and rest awhile.
And since we all know how hot Raleigh can be in June, a tent rental is a must, offering a shady, protected, location when guests just need a break from the festivities. Coordinate linens and tableware as another fun way to tie into the party’s theme.
